“Then they
came to Jericho. And as He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great
number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat along the way
begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out,
“Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Many ordered him to keep silent. But he cried
out even more, “Son of David, have mercy on
me!” Jesus stood still and commanded him
to be called. So they called the blind man, saying, “Be of good comfort.
Rise, He is calling you.” Throwing
aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. Jesus answered
him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
The blind
man said to Him, “Rabbi, that I might receive my sight.” Jesus said to
him, “Go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he
received his sight and followed Jesus on the way.” Mark 10:46-52
By
reading these verses, it may sound like a common story of someone asking for
help; a blind man along the way begging. But paying attention in between the lines, we
can absolve a lot in these few verses and see how we can act:
1. Take action – That moment the blind man saw an opportunity to change his
like, and he wouldn’t give it away. Shame or being rebuked by the multitude that
followed Jesus woudn’t stop him; after all he wasn’t doing anything wrong. He
had faith and wanted a miracle. When we are in the right way, wanting what’s
right, we fight until the end and we don’t let the opportunites pass by. That’s why you cannot let anything
stop you from participating in the Fasting of Daniel. Fight for what you want:
the Holy Spirit.
2. Persevere – Even though they told him to
keep silent, the blind man cried out even more. He wasn’t intimidated by the
negative words to make him give up. When you truly want something, you go until
the end. The blind man could have thought, “I called once but Jesus didn’t pay
attention, I better keep silent now.” Sometimes God wants to see if you really
believe. Do the Fasting of Daniel until the end. Do not give up in the middle
of the way. Those who give up easily can never conquer anything.
3. Call Jesus attention – The blind man couldn’t see,
however he did something for himself. He cried out so much that Jesus seeing
his determination commanded to call him. If you really want the Holy Spirit,
you must call God’s attention with your faith and change your ways. The Fasting
of Daniel is a way to do it.
4. Let go – As we know beggars normally
have a garment that they use to warm them up, and also to lay it down on the
floor to receive their alms. When Jesus called him, he was sure that his live
would never be the same. By leaving his garment behind, he proved by his faith
that he would not need it again because he would be healed. He left behind what
he had of most important; he let go of it. Do you want to live a new life? Then
you must let go of pride, shame, shyness, position, wrong life, etc. all of
these must be left behind.
5. Be decided – Even though Jesus knew that he
was blind, He still asked what miracle he wanted. The blind man answered, “I
want to see.” The same moment the miracle happened, and he started following
Jesus ways and not along the way anymore, because his faith took him out of
that situation. Jesus knows that you want and need the Holy Spirit, still you
must seek Him, do your part, and the miracle will happen.
